As a Professor and Chair of Environmental Science for decades, I have worked in a variety of ways to promote a path to an environmentally sustainable future. My University has hosted major conferences and events on climate change, water privatization, local and sustainable food, salmon population recovery, and other regional and broader-scale topics. We also believe that you need to walk your talk, and so we have constructed a LEED platinum, two LEED gold, and one LEED certified building, and prior to the LEED standards we constructed the first environmentally sensitive science building in the US, with energy efficiency over 50% better than Oregon's building code.

At home my family has invested in a super high-efficiency furnace, a tankless water heater, a photovoltaic solar array on our roof, and our newest acquisition is an Earth's Flame Hybrid grate system. It produces less particulate air pollution than a conventional wood fireplace, improves the fireplace's draft so there is less carbon monoxide spillage back into the house, and throws more radiant heat into the room. It also uses much less natural gas than a conventional gas fireplace insert.

There are benefits to the Earth's Flame system in terms of avoiding greenhouse gas emissions, having a healthy house for children, and being economical to use. If what you want is the beauty of a wood fire, a fireplace that keeps indoor air healthier and emits less pollution to the environment, and one that warms you up when you sit in front of it, this is the choice for you. It is better for the environment than other options, but gives you the joy of a real wood fire. I think this is a great answer for guilt-free fireplace use for environmentally concerned homeowners.

The next time one enjoys the comforting flame of a gas fireplace, they can thank Joe Leighton, who originally thought of the idea of connecting gas into fireplaces.
